Snakes and Ladders is one of the most traditional board games in Mexico. The objective of the game is moral: the ladders represent how certain actions lead to recognition, while the snakes represent vices, bad behaviors, and how these lead to punishment. The spaces you advance through feature images of actions that will be punished or rewarded: the man who fights goes back down the snake and is imprisoned, the one who rests on the sofa is reduced to begging. The ladders elevate those who work to wealth, those who obey love, and those who build their own house. Despite being dictated by a roll of the dice, the game places the responsibility for success or failure on the individual, in a linear, meritocratic, and often servile logic that disregards social context or the arbitrariness of life. In the series created by the artist, the images of the ladders and snakes are removed from the board, from their fixed and preconceived spaces, to inhabit the open and rugged surface of volcanic stone. Combined with adverbs of place and doubt, they shift us toward the unthinkable, the uncontrollable, the absurdity of existence. - Serpientes y escaleras es uno de los juegos de mesa más tradicionales de México. El objetivo del juego es moral: las escaleras son una representación de cómo ciertas acciones producen reconocimientos, las serpientes indican los vicios, los malos comportamientos y la forma en que estos conducen al castigo. Las casillas por las que se avanza traen imágenes de acciones que serán castigadas o recompensadas: el hombre que pelea retrocede por la serpiente y es encarcelado, el que descansa en el sofá es rebajado a la mendicidad. Las escaleras elevan a quien trabaja hacia la riqueza, quien obedece al amor, quien construye su casa propia. A pesar de ser dictado por un lanzamiento de dados, el juego pone en la acción del individuo la responsabilidad por su éxito o fracaso, en una lógica lineal, meritocrática y muchas veces servil que desconsidera el contexto social o la arbitrariedad de la vida. En la serie creada por la artista, las imágenes de las escaleras y serpientes son retiradas del tablero, de sus casillas fijas y preconcebidas, para habitar la superficie abierta y accidentada de la piedra volcánica. Combinadas con adverbios de lugar y duda, nos desplazan hacia lo imponderable, lo incontrolable, lo absurdo de la existencia.
