Artwork Description

The aesthetic qualities of serenity and the sublime coalesce within Ken Mihara’s work. In essence, these qualities are the scents of Japan, a culture that has searched for beauty within austerity, spiritual simplicity, and the cherishing of patina. Mihara’s solemn stoneware are in fact inspired deeply from the beauty of his hometown of Izumo in Western Japan, yet his works are far more than odes to nature. They are, above all, a window into the artist’s soul, and are monuments of self-expression that capture and convey the Ken Mihara of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. With acquisitions by over 40 leading public institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museums, Mihara’s unglazed, multi-fired works have captivated a global audience. It many ways, it can be said that Mihara is emblematic of the Kanata aesthetic, creating a unique beauty that can and will stand the tests of time.
