Artwork Description

The newest addition to Kanata’s growing roster of painters, Chiko Takei of Tokyo is a painter unaffiliated with any association or painterly group, yet paints with a stoic sense of commitment and conviction, using a wide variety of traditional Japanese techniques such as tarashikomi (blotting), resist painting, as well as the intentional oxidation of silver leaf, among others, to create a world of abstraction that is distinctly her own. Graduating from the Musashino Art University with a degree in Japanese painting, Takei was quite the rebel in university, and essentially self-taught herself the many techniques that she uses today. Her style of painting in itself, focusing predominantly on the minimal and the abstract, also shows a rebellious flair in completely eschewing the figurative, which is often times a prerequisite for success in the Japanese domestic market.
