Artwork Description

Throughout her life, Sachiko Oshima had drifted in and out of cities and countries, an almost nomadic experience of discovering new facets to not only her surroundings but to herself through her extensive travels. Born and raised in Tokyo, from the age of 17 Oshima would find herself living in such diverse locales as Hong Kong, London, Paris, Chicago, and most recently Athens, with each experience influencing and inspiring her in magical, myriad ways. It is the sunlight, the air, the facades of buildings in each and every locale that are boldly different, and like layers upon layers of paint that has been brushed upon a canvas in multiple coats, these luscious memories accumulate, amalgamate, and coalesce into a single unique aesthetic that Oshima can unequivocally call her own. Her lack of professional training in painting is perhaps one of the greatest reasons her works feature a lack of pretension borne from the weight of art history and the eyes of the industry, and instead, brim with a care-free esprit emanating from the free nature of the artist herself. Sachiko Oshima’s paintings explores the simple accents and textures of her environs, the oft-overlooked precipices of everyday life that are rich in character and pulsate with the positive energies of love and life.  e artist is fascinated by the surfaces of old buildings, as well as the patterns and shapes borne from nature. In this light, Oshima’ s paintings try and extract the beauty of her surroundings through the lens of her emotions, and imbue them with the strongest impressions while experimenting with the complexities of composition, colours and textures, with layers of paint continuously concealing and revealing a hidden story, emerging from the depths of not only Oshima’s brushstrokes but from the depths of her consciousness. “Wild Serenity” , a painting brimming with visceral brushstrokes of greens layered in heavy impasto acrylic, this painting marks Sachiko Oshima was inspired by Oshima’s visit to Singapore, where she was inspired by the beauty of the sunlight hitting the luscious greens of the jungle forests of Singapore.
