Artwork Description
How might a Moroccan rug become Mexican? Alfombra Sin Título was conceived as a response to the question: How might a Moroccan rug become Mexican? Set within the dynamic landscape of global design, this project reinterprets material traditions and cultural narratives across borders. Presented at Zona Maco, this piece invites viewers to consider how design objects, as cultural artifacts, shift in meaning through movement, exchange, and reinterpretation. At its core, Alfombra Sin Título is an exploration of identity in a world where borders blur, and local traditions meet the forces of globalization. It reflects the delicate balance between preserving craft and embracing innovation— between rootedness in local heritage and the interconnectedness of a globalized world. Through the lens of design ontology, Alfombra Sin Título is more than an artifact—it is a co-designer of human experience, prompting the question: Does sitting on this Moroccan rug, removing my shoes, and spending time on the floor make me, in some way, more Moroccan? Or does it instead evoke Mexican traditions, such as sitting on a petate, a practice rooted in pre-Columbian customs? This piece encourages users to slow down, to feel the tactile richness of its knots and textures, and to reflect on how the rug shapes their behaviors and experiences. But perhaps, instead of making us "more Moroccan" or "more Mexican," this rug reveals that such distinctions dissolve in the intimacy of shared human experiences. It becomes a space where identities blend, celebrating the act of being present, grounded, and connected to craft, culture, and each other. Each piece is made to order and requires approximately 8–10 weeks to produce. Orders will only be accepted during the month of the fair, February 2025.
