Artwork Description

Nature has always been my greatest inspiration—a boundless source of hope, healing, and tranquillity. Growing up, I watched my mother, a talented painter and craftswoman, transform yarns and fabrics into intricate works of art. Her creativity nurtured in me a deep love for textures and colors. During the pandemic, she taught me to stitch and crochet, sparking a journey that led to the development of my unique visual language. In this work, I explore freedom and growth—nature’s most profound gifts—through vibrant abstract tapestries. My practice blends traditional techniques with experimental methods refined during my residency at Afriart Gallery’s Silhouette Projects. I work with materials like yarn, sisal, palm leaves, and jute sacks, each chosen for its texture and symbolic resonance. Among these, the jute sack holds a central place in my recent works. Often seen as a utilitarian and disposable material, the jute sack mirrors the duality of utility and marginalization in society, representing individuals or communities whose contributions are essential yet undervalued. By reclaiming and elevating this material, I reveal its intricacy and resilience, offering a metaphor for transformation and renewal in both materials and social contexts. Through my tapestries, I aim to reconnect with the boundless freedom of childhood while addressing societal and cultural constraints.
