Satoru Ozaki
Artwork Description
An ascetic recluse living in the foothills of Chiba who refused to hold exhibitions of his work for many years before his representation by Kanata in 2014, metal sculptor Satoru Ozaki is considered one of the 'lost treasures' of Japan in light of his mind-bending techniques of hammering and polishing stainless steel into beautiful, minimal forms of great depth and presence. Finding a muse in the aesthetic movement of Kanata, Ozaki has sprung forth from his hermit-like existence to create never-before-seen sculptures in shimmering steel that are now captivating audiences the world over, thereby creating the national treasures of tomorrow’s Japan today. Ozaki’s works are imbued with a Kubrikian futurism entwined with a beauty that takes the viewer into realms unforeseen. The mirror-like finish is one of the greatest hand-polished techniques in the world, made by not only a talented artist but also a master craftsman. Through a deep-rooted impulse to experiment with the phenomenology of space, Ozaki’s oeuvre has long embraced the mirrored surface for its play with reflection and distortion, forcing the viewer to reassess their relationship to the stability of their own mirrored self in the world. This emphasis on distorting the realities surrounding the viewer and the artist is culminated in the Ozaki work for ZONA MACO, entitled Seed. The emergence of a bulging ridge that appears from the central bottom of the work, then slowly but surely rising up to form a clear, sharp peak at the top of the work – it is this juxtaposition of various elements, the smooth mirror finish as opposed to the shimmering hammer marks on the back of the work, the round softness of the rims and bulge of the work in sharp contrast with the razor-edged peak, that create a vigorous dialogue within all of Ozaki’s works, imbuing each hand-hammered work with an pulsating beauty that enraptures deeply. Like a seed that one day grows and blossoms into a beautiful flower, the work is a symbol of innocence and purity that one day can change the world around it. The metal poems of Satoru Ozaki are born using the utmost in technique, precision and artistry, and with a growing legion of fans throughout the world, the story of Satoru Ozaki has only just begun.
