Artwork Description

In 2014, when the United States declared a migrant crisis due to the sudden increase in children detained at the U.S.-Mexico border, and the first deportation of a group of children to San Pedro Sula, Honduras occurred, the renowned news agency Reuters reported the event with a disconcerting naivety: “Seemingly happy, the deported children left the airport under a cloudy sky and a warm afternoon. One by one, they boarded a bus, playing with balloons that had been handed to them.” For Marilá Dardot, an artist whose focus is on the fragile intersection between language and its mediums (the word, the page, the book, the wall), and who has explored the terms of this relationship in political discourse and its discrepancies, this faint and silent sign of a return to innocence expressed the tragedy of a journey without hope. By reproducing these balloons with the threatening weight of lead, Dardot alludes to the transnational resistance to acknowledging the shared responsibility for this exodus, as well as the physical threats that pursue migrants beyond their places of origin.
