Artwork Description

Rodin created the model of the bust of Suzon in 1875, during his stay in Brussels. He arrived two years ealier, and along with Van Rasbourg designed the decorations of the buildings then under construction (the Bourse de Commerce, the garden wall of the Academies, the throne room of the Royal Palace, the facade of the Music Conservatory, etc.). He remained there until 1877, when he returned to Paris. Rodin’s first Suzon was made of marble, and acquired by the Compagnie des Bronzes who used the model to cast bronzes. Our bronze is a witness of this rich Brussels period of Rodin, and the production of the famous Compagnie des Bronzes.
