Artwork Description

The ‘Action of the Star’ is a corporal action carried out by Carlos Leppe in Galería CAL in 1979, with the participation of the theorist Nelly Richard. It took place in a room whose walls were painted white. The following text was written on the back wall in block letters and in a typeface that only showed its outline: ‘In 1919, in Paris, Duchamp tonsured a star on his head as an act of art. In 1979, in Santiago de Chile, Leppetonsura another star, coinciding with the lone star of Chile. Superimposition of two references, one cultural, the other national, on the living body of the artist’. On the wall on the right hand side after entering the room, one could read ‘The Chilean flag: transparent surface’. On the wall to the left, a neon tube was installed horizontally. To the left of the neon, in the same typography as the background wall, the words ‘The flag’ and ‘surface’ were written.
