‘Las Cantatrices’ is a video directed by Nelly Richard and Juan Enrique Forch, made in the mid-1980s. Carlos Leppe is filmed in instances of mimetic interpretation of opera arias. His torso has been plastered, as have his arms and hands; his face has been made up in a casicaricatured manner with red lipstick, blush and light blue eye shadow, and his mouth has been intervened by a retraction apparatus (mouth opener). The camera footage was edited to produce three pieces that differed in having three backgrounds (blue, white and red). Each of these pieces gave rise to a version that was reproduced separately (three channels), using monitors arranged in line on white metal nursing tables. In front of these, on a similar table, Leppe set up a fourth monitor, which played a tape in which his mother - Catalina Arroyo - appeared, speaking on camera, in the foreground. The title of this fourth video will be ‘Narración de Catalina Arroyo>> and was directed by Nelly Richard, it consisted of the recording and editing of the reading of a text about Leppe's relationship with her mother, read by herself. The four videos make up the work ‘Las Cantatrices’ and their objectual arrangement forms part of the installation ’ Waiting Room’.
